30 Party Games for Friends, Family, and Online Play | Compared with GPA

30 party game picks

Party games are the shelf you reach for when friends or family want to play together. Some of them are a race, some are a shared task, and some are a stack of short minigames.

The range runs from a board like Super Mario Party Jamboree, to a few seconds of WarioWare: Move It!, to a crowd competing online.

This article sorts 30 party games into five types. Player count and where you play matter, and so do competition, cooperation, reflexes, and mind games. 26 titles have a GPA page, so you can check the tendency tags (one pre-release title is not treated as a finished analysis). 4 titles have no GPA page: the notes stay qualitative, and this article does not invent a score.

How to choose a party game

  • Player count: two players (Portal 2), three or four on a couch (Super Mario Party Jamboree), or a large online match (Fall Guys, Sonic Rumble). The count changes the shortlist.
  • Where you play: one screen, split screen, or online only. If people are apart, start with online.
  • What the game does: versus, co-op, minigames, party royale, or mind games. The five categories in this article follow that split.
  • Experience in the room: Jackbox and the sports games leave room for people who do not play. Smash and battle royales show the gap faster.
  • Session length: WarioWare: Move It! is a few seconds at a time. Co-op horror is often 20–40 minutes a round. Match the time you actually have.
  • Platforms: one Switch, or everyone on PC. Nintendo Classics titles are played on a different machine from the original N64.

GPA tags such as Co-op and Strategy describe how a game plays in the GPA analysis. The Versus / Co-op label in this article describes the multiplayer format. They are not the same thing.

Online support and playing together in the same room are different. Check the official store page for the latest details on each game.

Board classics

    Overview

Up to four players move around a resort island and compete for stars on a board, with minigames in between. There are more than 110 minigames. The online Koopathlon mode supports up to 20 players.

Why it works as a party game

On the same screen, you can see whose piece is closest to a star every turn. Coins from a minigame do not lock in the win: dice rolls and items still move stars late in the game. The party is watching a lead collapse in one turn, with all four players looking at the same board.

    Good for

Four people around one Switch who want the last star's destination to matter more than who plays cleanest.

    Watch out

Four players need one controller each. Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV is a separate product released on July 24, 2025, and adds camera and mouse modes.

    Overview

Scheduled for October 29, 2026. A Sanrio board, 45 or more minigames, and avatar dress-up for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. This is pre-release information.

Why it works as a party game

Official materials describe the minigames as leaning cooperative, with players moving together rather than grinding each other down. Up to four people take turns on one screen, so it is a candidate for a room that mixes kids and people who rarely play — check how heavy the rules feel after release.

    Good for

Families who want up to four people sharing a screen with Sanrio characters. Confirm the contents after release.

    Watch out

Because it is unreleased, this article does not treat it as played and does not present a finished GPA score. A GPA page may exist, but the analysis tags are not treated as final.

    Overview

3D battles with Gold and Silver Pokémon, plus a set of short minigames, in one game. Up to four players. No online.

Why it works as a party game

Players who know Pokémon types can make better tactical decisions in battles. The minigames, however, are easy to understand from the controls alone, so newcomers do not need deep Pokémon knowledge to join in.

    Good for

Up to four people in one room, some of whom know Pokémon and some who do not.

    Watch out

The main battles lean on reading matchups. Keep the N64 original and the Nintendo Classics release distinct.

    Overview

A race for finishing position. Split Joy-Con supports four players on one screen, and online matches go up to 12. One race is about 3–5 minutes.

Why it works as a party game

The controls are simple, but items swing the standings, so experience alone does not decide the race. Each race is short, and a loss leads straight into the next one, which keeps a mix of new and experienced players in the same session.

    Good for

A group sharing one Switch for short repeat races, or an online group that wants to go up to 12 players.

    Watch out

The GPA co-op tag is high, but the core format here is versus. Online play needs a stable connection.

    About 10–20 minutes per game

    Overview

Prompts appear on the host screen, and players answer in text from their own phones or PCs. The pack includes word games such as Quiplash 2.

Why it works as a party game

Everyone writes an answer, and the room votes on the funniest or most convincing response. The humor comes from seeing what your friends actually wrote, so the answers themselves become the entertainment.

    Good for

A host plus about eight people at a party or on a call who do not want to spend time explaining a controller.

    Watch out

No GPA page. Player caps differ by game inside the pack.

Reflex and minigames

2. Reflex and minigames (6)

Rounds are short, and you learn by trying rather than by a rules talk. Reflex, timing, and a snap decision move the result. Easy to replay after a gathering or in a gap.

    Overview

More than 200 microgames that last a few seconds, played by swinging and tilting a Joy-Con. Party mode is 2–4 players. There is no online versus.

Why it works as a party game

The prompt is gone before you can think, so the body moves first. The Joy-Con that swung late is the laugh in the room before the next microgame starts. The score comes from the reaction in front of you, not from games you already know.

    Good for

Two to four people in the same room, each with a Joy-Con, when you want to start without a rules talk.

    Watch out

Check the official player chart. A Switch Lite by itself cannot run a four-player party.

    Overview

Sports such as tennis and bowling, played by swinging a Joy-Con. One screen supports 1–4 players, and there is online versus. A match is about 3–5 minutes.

Why it works as a party game

You join a sport by swinging or moving a Joy-Con, so the result tracks the motion more than prior game experience. Bowling, tennis, and the other sports each feel different, so the same group splits into different favorites.

    Good for

Families who want a light physical game, or a short online one-on-one with someone who is not in the room.

    Watch out

No GPA page. Some sports need a Joy-Con strap and floor space.

    Overview

A sports collection played with the orientation of a Wii Remote Plus. Swordplay, Frisbee, and the other sports each use the body differently. The original platform is Wii.

Why it works as a party game

The swing of the remote affects the result more than button layout, so people with little game experience can still take part. Each sport changes the motion, and a group of four tends to split into different strengths.

    Good for

A family that can still turn on a Wii and wants people who do not play games in the same circle.

    Watch out

It runs on a Wii, and is a different product from the Switch sports game. Local wireless play is two players.

    Overview

Hide-and-seek where you paint your body to blend into the background. Hiders paint and hold a spot; seekers point at what looks wrong.

Why it works as a party game

The round turns on whether someone can tell where you are. Hiders match the background and decide when to stay still; seekers look for a line that was there a moment ago. It is comparison on the same screen, not a reflex shooter.

    Good for

An online lobby that wants to call out the moment someone is spotted. Player count depends on the lobby.

    Watch out

Observation matters more than reflexes. Check the store page for the current player cap and match rules.

    Overview

Tennis across a court. Characters differ in movement and special timing, and four players become doubles. No online.

Why it works as a party game

You can understand the basics immediately: serve, return, and cover the court. In doubles, each player has a clear role, so even players with different skill levels can contribute. A set takes about ten minutes, making it easy to switch partners between matches.

    Good for

Four people in the same room who want 2v2, using character traits and timing more than tennis experience.

    Watch out

This is the N64 game via Nintendo Classics. The RPG mode is a long single-player stretch.

    Overview

Golf where three clicks set distance and direction, then you compare hole scores. Up to four players. No online.

Why it works as a party game

Before the swing, the people who are not hitting can already say whether that club reaches. Wind and lie stay on screen as the next position, so the person next to you can point at the miss immediately. Turns mean four players do not split the screen.

    Good for

A calmer group of four who want to see one shot before the next, rather than a microgame.

    Watch out

It sits in the reflex category, but one hole runs longer than a microgame. Keep the N64 original and Classics distinct.

Online versus

    Overview

A party royale where a crowd runs obstacle and survival rounds together until the last beans remain. There are solo rounds and team modes.

Why it works as a party game

A crowd runs the same obstacle course, and contact or a mistake reshuffles the order. The party comes from being shoved or blocked by the people around you, not only from landing the jump yourself.

    Good for

Friends in different places who want to drop into the same match and repeat rounds.

    Overview

Up to 32 players move through three stages in a toy world, collecting rings. The core mode is Ring Survival. The service launched on November 5, 2025.

Why it works as a party game

A large group contests short rounds on the same stage, so one match does not linger. The appeal is the chaos of everyone running Sonic-style speed stages at once.

    Good for

Friends apart who want a short ranking and then one more match.

    Overview

A building-and-shooting battle royale, plus squads, Creative, and limited-time modes. A standard battle royale match is about 20 minutes.

Why it works as a party game

In a squad of four, voice chat naturally divides roles such as scouting, attacking, and watching different angles. Creative mode shifts the focus away from winning and toward playing together in custom environments. Standard battle royale matches, however, can expose a large skill gap in building and shooting.

    Good for

An online group that wants to switch between a serious battle royale and a shorter, rule-changed mode with the same people.

    Watch out

A standard battle royale match runs long. For a short party, the mode choice matters. Building and aim create a skill gap.

    Overview

Soccer played with cars. A match is about five minutes. Split screen supports up to four on one screen; online includes 3v3.

Why it works as a party game

A goal still means a pass and a shot, so the sport itself is a short explanation. What is specific is the car's bounce and hitting the ball in the air — early on, a touch is enough to move the score. Five minutes means the next group can restart right after a stronger side. Aerial roles split as you improve, but a casual match already works before that.

    Good for

Online groups who want short rematches, or up to four people on a split screen.

    Watch out

The gap to experienced players is large. Better as a casual match than a ranked one.

    Overview

Crewmates finish tasks while impostors sabotage and reduce the group. A meeting vote decides who is ejected. 4–15 players.

Why it works as a party game

The next beat is what someone says in the meeting. The impostor explains why they were not at the body; crewmates compare the path they saw. Whether the lie holds, and whose line the room believes, becomes the vote. That conversation is the game.

    Good for

Five or more people online who can talk by voice or text and want to read a lie.

    Watch out

Voice or text is assumed. Too few players and the round does not hold.

    Overview

A battle royale inside a shrinking zone, from solo to squads. There are large matches and modes with different rules.

Why it works as a party game

For a party, squads matter more than solo. Voice decides who enters the building first, whether to revive a downed teammate, and when the remaining count means running for the zone. The time left in the same match changes with whether the four decisions line up, not only with who shoots better.

    Good for

An online group, phones included, that wants to decide survival together.

    Overview

A party royale where a crowd runs the same obstacle course and players drop out as they fall. One round is a few minutes.

Why it works as a party game

You can join by dodging obstacles and heading for the goal, without memorizing a long rule set. Players who are still learning the controls can still land near the top by accident, and online rematches are easy to start.

    Good for

An online mix of phones and PCs that wants short laps, repeated.

Co-op and teamwork

4. Co-op and teamwork (6)

    Overview

A co-op game where you serve orders to raise the score. Kitchens move or split apart. 1–4 players, and one stage is about 5–10 minutes.

Why it works as a party game

Before the orders stack, you say who chops, who loads the pot, and who washes plates. If the split is late, two people chop the same vegetable and nobody carries the finished plate. The shout of 'not that, now' is the step that gets the next order out.

    Good for

Up to four people, on one screen or online, who can assign roles on the spot.

    Watch out

Missed calls get sharp quickly. The GPA co-op tag lines up with the play format here, but the tag number is not the text on this card.

    Overview

A co-op puzzle where two players link walls with portal guns and open paths that one portal cannot reach.

Why it works as a party game

Some devices do not reach the other player's room from your portal alone. You agree where the exit goes, and the next room opens the moment both of you pass. The clear is whether the pair's order matched, not a crowd making noise.

    Good for

A pair who want to talk through the steps. It works online or in the same room.

    Watch out

The co-op campaign is built for two. It is a weak main slot for a large party.

Up to four players enter a building and narrow the ghost type from evidence tools. One investigation is about 20–30 minutes.

Why it works as a party game

One player can monitor temperatures while another checks for fingerprints or other evidence. If someone panics and retreats, the team has to decide whether to keep investigating or leave with what they have found.

    Good for

An online group of up to four with voice chat, including people who are uneasy with horror but can take a role.

    Watch out

    Overview

Up to four players enter abandoned facilities, haul scrap back to the ship, and meet a quota. One round is about 20–40 minutes.

Why it works as a party game

The funniest runs are often the ones where the team has to abandon valuable scrap and run back to the ship. Deciding when to push deeper and when to retreat is what creates the memorable moments.

    Good for

Up to four online players who want horror and co-op cut into one round.

    Overview

One killer against four survivors who repair generators and escape. One match is about 10–15 minutes.

Why it works as a party game

Survivors switch roles on the fly: someone repairs a generator, someone goes for the rescue, someone draws the killer. In a group of five you can also rotate the killer, so the same friends see a different game depending on the seat.

    Good for

Five people online who want short matches and to rotate the killer.

    Watch out

The killer is one player. A poor fit if someone dislikes that pressure. GPA also scores it high on versus and horror tags.

    Overview

A co-op action game about carrying furniture out of a house before the timer ends. One to four players push long pieces to the goal.

Why it works as a party game

A long sofa does not turn a corner alone. You call the grip points and build an angle that fits the door. When the angle slips, it sticks in the wall, and the person who rushed sends the piece the other way. The failed carry becomes the next conversation about how to hold it.

    Good for

Up to four people, local or online, who can laugh when the furniture misbehaves.

    Watch out

No GPA page. Controls collide easily, so it lasts longer if the room allows the accidents instead of chasing the score.

    Overview

A versus fighter where you knock stocks off the stage. One screen supports up to eight players, and you can turn items and stage hazards on.

Why it works as a party game

Movement and attacks start with a short explanation. With items on, a picked-up tool removes a stock more often than the strongest player's combo. Reading moves in a 1v1 and scattering items in an eight-player match are different games; the latter leaves room for someone who just started.

    Good for

A group that wants an eight-player brawl on one Switch. Move-reading fits a smaller group with items off.

    Watch out

A serious 1v1 shows a large skill gap. For a party, turn items and stage hazards on.

    Overview

Two to four players place traps and platforms on the course each round, then have to cross the course they just built.

Why it works as a party game

A spot placed so only the other player falls is a spot you may have to cross next. A trap that is too mean becomes the placer's own miss. Each round, the same group adjusts how hard to obstruct and how much space they still need to clear.

    Good for

Two to four people who will suggest mean layouts. It works locally or online if everyone can see the course.

Why it works as a party game

The deliberately awkward physics make even a simple grab unpredictable. Players can stumble, miss a punch, or accidentally drag each other off the stage, so failed attacks are often funnier than successful ones.

Why it works as a party game

    Good for

An online group of about eight that wants the accident more than a serious result.

Hiders turn into objects on the stage, and seekers shoot the ones that moved. A round is a few minutes.

Why it works as a party game

The key is noticing which object looks slightly out of place rather than simply having the fastest aim. Hiders need to choose when to move and when to stay still, while seekers have to decide which suspicious objects are worth checking. Each short round can create a new 'I knew it was you' moment.

    Good for

An online group that wants observation and mind games, rather than an FPS duel.

    Watch out

Player count depends on the lobby. It is less widely queued than Dead by Daylight, so matchmaking depends on the time of day.

Summary

A single score is not enough to choose a party game. Player count, local or online play, and whether the group wants competition or cooperation all matter. GPA adds another layer by showing gameplay tendencies and similar games for each title.

For co-op, see20 co-op games. For a stream, see30 games that work on stream. For asymmetric hide-and-seek, see20 asymmetric and hide-and-seek games.
