die-and-retry” Games

Die-and-retry marks titles built around dying, restarting, and learning enemy tells or routes by feel. On GPA, we tag games — especially around the soulslike orbit — where checkpoint retries and 'I can read it next time' are the core loop.

※ Tags are created only when 5 or more titles share them.

What is “die-and-retry”?

"Die-and-retry" (死にゲー) is player slang for games that teach through frequent death and reattempts. Boss tells, stamina management, route mastery, and death costs (temporary progress or currency loss) are common. Where high difficulty describes challenge intensity broadly, die-and-retry emphasizes the learn-by-dying loop itself. It overlaps soulslikes heavily but also appears in Metroidvanias and roguelites. GPA tags works where that retry learning is front and center.

Who is it for?

  • Enjoy dying if the next try feels smarter
  • Love mastery from learning boss patterns
  • Prefer soulslike
  • hard-action learning loops
  • Want the release of a hard-earned clear

Less suited for

  • Burn out quickly on death loops
  • Want a guided smooth clear
  • Prioritize comfortable story or exploration over failure
