Nioh 2 builds its samurai action around the Soul Core system and a Yokai Shift transformation that temporarily unlocks a second move set. The Burst Counter mechanic rewards reading specific enemy attacks. GPA scores it high on Action and Difficulty — the combination that places it in the Soulslike cluster while the transformation system provides a mechanical layer Dark Souls entries lack.

▸Characteristics & Analysis
Our editorial team scored "仁王2(Nioh 2)" by using its feel of 戦国×妖怪, soulslike, and build crafting as the primary lens, weighting Action and High Difficulty most heavily. Top similar titles include "Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty(ウォーロン)", "ザ・サージ2(The Surge 2)", "ダークソウル2:スカラー・オブ・ザ・ファースト・シン(Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin)".
Nioh 2
Game Overview
Nioh 2 is a high-difficulty action RPG developed by Team NINJA and set in a fictionalized version of Japan's Sengoku period. Players take control of a half-human, half-Yokai protagonist caught between the worlds of samurai and supernatural creatures.
Like other Soulslike games, Nioh 2 demands careful combat, patience, and a willingness to learn from repeated deaths. But it also puts much more emphasis on weapons, skills, equipment, and character builds than many games in the genre.
Players can choose from a wide variety of weapons and switch between High, Mid, and Low Stances during combat. Ki management is also essential, as attacks, dodges, and other actions consume Ki. Learning to recover it with Ki Pulses is a fundamental part of mastering the combat system.
GPA reflects this depth with high scores in Action (90%), High Difficulty (90%), Graphics (80%), Dark (75%), Strategic Gameplay (70%), and Character Growth (70%).
Gameplay Analysis
The biggest strength of Nioh 2 is the way it combines high-difficulty action with deep build customization.
Combat is not simply about memorizing enemy attacks and dodging at the right moment. Players need to manage their own Ki while looking for opportunities to drain the enemy's Ki as well. Each weapon has three different stances, allowing players to change their attack speed, power, and approach depending on the situation.
The Yokai mechanics add another layer to the system. By collecting Soul Cores from defeated Yokai, players can gain access to their unique Yokai Abilities. Burst Counters can also be used to interrupt powerful enemy attacks when timed correctly.
Players can eventually enter Yokai Shift, temporarily transforming into a Yokai and gaining access to a different set of abilities. These systems give Nioh 2 a distinct identity compared with more traditional Soulslike combat.
The result is a game where losing a fight doesn't necessarily mean that your mechanical skill is the only problem. You can change your weapon, skills, Soul Cores, Guardian Spirit, or equipment setup and approach the same enemy in a completely different way. Our Top 15 Parry & Action Games list places it around 75% parry difficulty — Ki, stances, and Yokai skills keep fights busy.

Author's Thoughts
What I find most interesting about Nioh 2 is how many different ways there are to overcome a difficult enemy.
Of course, learning attack patterns and improving your timing are still important. But the game also encourages experimentation.
Maybe a different weapon works better against a particular enemy. Maybe a Yokai Ability can drain its Ki more efficiently. Maybe changing your equipment or build can give you the advantage you need.
That means both the player and the character can become stronger at the same time. You gradually become better at reading enemies while also developing a build that suits your preferred playstyle.
The downside is that there is a lot to learn. Between Stances, Ki Pulses, skills, equipment, Yokai Abilities, Soul Cores, and other systems, Nioh 2 can be overwhelming for players unfamiliar with the genre. Its extremely high difficulty and system-heavy design make it much better suited to experienced action-game players than complete beginners.
Conclusion
Nioh 2 combines the demanding combat of a Soulslike with an unusually deep system of weapons, equipment, skills, and Yokai abilities.
Its appeal comes from more than simply “learning through death.” Players are constantly encouraged to think about how they can improve their build, change their approach, and find a more effective way to deal with each challenge.
That makes Nioh 2 an excellent choice for players who enjoy difficult action games as well as those who love experimenting with character builds and equipment. It can be overwhelming at first, but for players willing to learn its many systems, Nioh 2 offers one of the deepest and most flexible combat experiences in the Soulslike genre.
