GPA tags on the registered FromSoftware games are grouped here to show which kinds of play they share. The numbers are averages of the tag weights set on each title. They are not a ranking.

Traits shared by many games

High Difficulty, Action, and a Dystopian Setting are especially common, and they form the base of a FromSoftware experience. Open world and strategy, by contrast, vary widely from title to title.

What do FromSoftware games share?

What FromSoftware games share is not simply that they are hard. Many of them ask you to read the rules from enemy movement, level layout, and item text, then find your own way through by failing and trying again. How you do that changes sharply from title to title.

In Dark Souls, opening shortcuts and learning the map is the progression. In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, combat centers on deflecting attacks and breaking posture. In Elden Ring, exploring a large world and changing your build gives you another way past a wall. In Armored Core VI, assembly and engagement range are the solutions.

GPA data shows high difficulty and a dystopian setting across many of these games. Open world and strategy do not. The games share a design idea, and each one is still a different experience.

FromSoftware FAQ

What are FromSoftware's best-known games?

FromSoftware is known for Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring. The studio also makes games outside the soulslike line, including the Armored Core series. This page compares the FromSoftware titles registered in GPA.

Does FromSoftware make games that are not soulslikes?

Yes. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a sword-fighting game built on deflection and posture. Armored Core VI is a mech action game about assembling a machine. Both are FromSoftware games, and neither plays like a soulslike.

Where is the FromSoftware games list?

This page lists the FromSoftware games registered in GPA, by card, release year, series, and genre. Any title can open its own GPA analysis.

Which FromSoftware game should a new player start with?

These games do not play alike, so there is no single beginner pick. It is clearer to choose by the experience you want: Elden Ring for an open world, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice for parry-centered combat, or Armored Core VI if you want to build a machine. The “New to FromSoftware?” section on this page sorts them that way.

Why are FromSoftware games difficult?

All 7 FromSoftware games registered in GPA score 70% or higher on High Difficulty. Many of them ask you to learn the rules from enemy patterns, terrain, and item text, then build a method by failing and trying again. The reason they are hard still differs. Dark Souls is exploration and shortcuts, Sekiro is deflection and posture, Elden Ring is exploration and builds, and Armored Core VI is parts and engagement range.
